The MƒA Thursday Think Speaker Series brings accomplished speakers who dive into cutting-edge topics in STEM education to MƒA. These talks, held once a month throughout the school year, invite MƒA teachers and the general public to learn and engage with these thought leaders and professionals in mathematics, science, and education.
What can our classrooms teach us about the connection between our pedagogy and the work we do beyond them? Many of us are redefining what it means to be a STEM teacher in this anti-education political landscape. As forces at different levels of governance place growing pressure on educators and schools, what does it mean to be an educator in this moment? How do we teach our students to exercise their agency in and out of the classroom, and how do we model this ourselves?
In this talk, Dr. José Vilson shares his stories and research to show how educators and students can use their voices and classroom experiences to drive advocacy, community building, and transformational teacher leadership for authentic change in our communities and the world. Throughout the talk, he draws from some of his political work, including building culturally responsive curriculum, social impact, and content creation for NYC government.
Dr. José Luis Vilson is a veteran educator, sociologist, and author. He is the co-founder and Executive Director of EduColor, an organization dedicated to building, supporting, and amplifying communities of educators of color.
Dr. Vilson earned his Ph.D. in Sociology and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and currently works as a postdoctoral research associate at Bank Street College of Education and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Teachers College, Columbia University. He serves on the board of directors for the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards and PowerMyLearning.
He is also a special advisor for Teachers Unify to End Gun Violence and was named a New America Fellow. Dr. Vilson has written for The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Atlantic and given talks at TED, AERA, NCTM, and NCTE. He is the author of the best-selling book This Is Not A Test: A New Narrative on Race, Class, and Education, and the forthcoming book You Already Know: Connecting Student Knowledge to Mathematical Understanding.
