The MƒA Equity Webinars Series invites nationally recognized educators to share ideas that support equity within STEM. Following an interactive presentation by the speaker, Master Teachers have the opportunity to discuss how these ideas might be applied in their own school environments in small groups. Teachers from MƒA, other Master Teacher programs, and people interested in learning more about MƒA are invited to attend.
How can we sustain and nourish ourselves as educators who teach for social justice and equity? A 2024 Pew Research Center survey found that more than half of respondents reported dissatisfaction with their jobs, feeling overworked, underpaid, under-resourced, under-respected, and exhausted. These conditions deeply affect teachers and can most acutely affect those teachers working toward equity, justice, and liberation.
In this webinar, Dr. Shamari Reid presents teacher dissatisfaction as an issue of equity, revealing how teaching for social justice can be more demanding than other approaches because it requires teachers to work in opposition to the system that employs them.
Drawing upon the work of civil rights activists, historians, and his own book, Humans Who Teach, Dr. Reid invites teachers to explore how they can teach for liberation while simultaneously taking care of themselves and each other.
Dr. Shamari Reid (he/him/his) is the author of Humans Who Teach: A Guide for Centering Love, Justice, and Liberation in Schools. An Assistant Professor of Justice and Belonging in Education at New York University, Dr. Reid’s work centers love as a moral imperative in social justice education and as a path toward culturally sustaining school communities. He has published on race, gender, and sexuality in schools and in a variety of peer-reviewed journals, including the Teachers College Record, Urban Education, and Curriculum Inquiry. Dr. Reid is the creator and host of the Heinemann podcast series “Water for Teachers.”
