The MƒA Equity Webinars Series invites nationally recognized educators to share ideas that support equity within STEM. Following an interactive presentation by the speaker, Master Teachers have the opportunity to discuss how these ideas might be applied in their own school environments in small groups. Teachers from MƒA, other Master Teacher programs, and people interested in learning more about MƒA are invited to attend.
Do you want to incorporate climate justice curriculum into your classroom while also supporting your students' social-emotional learning (SEL)? In this webinar, educators and activists Tom Roderick and Elissa Teles Munoz guide teachers through tools from Roderick’s award-winning book Teach for Climate Justice: A Vision for Transforming Education.
Tom and Elissa share how building a “beloved community, a place where people take responsibility for each other’s thriving,” can serve as the foundation for climate justice education. Teachers explore a climate justice framework and adaptable SEL activities and tools from the Teach for Climate Justice website, the Climate Emotions Toolkit for Educators, and the Mental Health Teacher Guide.
Teachers leave with new strategies to strengthen their classroom community, foster group solidarity, and support students in taking action to care for one another and build a just and sustainable future.
Tom Roderick is an educator, activist, writer, and Co-Director of the Teach for Climate Justice Project, which aims to bring transformative climate justice education to millions of educators and young people in the United States and beyond.
Tom came to education through the civil rights movement and taught in Harlem for ten years, including seven years as teacher-director of a storefront school led by parents. He served as the founding Executive Director of Morningside Center for Teaching Social Responsibility, a national leader in high-quality, research-based programs in social and emotional learning (SEL), restorative practices, and racial equity.
Tom is the recipient of the Mary Utne O’Brien Award for Excellence in Expanding Evidence-Based Practice of Social and Emotional Learning. He has a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University and a master’s degree and honorary doctorate from Bank Street College of Education. He is the author of A School of Our Own: Parents, Power, and Community at the East Harlem Block Schools and, most recently, Teach for Climate Justice: A Vision for Transforming Education.
Elissa Teles Munoz is a climate education specialist, project manager, and Co-Director of the Teach for Climate Justice Project, where she facilitates study groups for teachers nationwide.
She also serves as the K-12 Programming Manager for Climate Mental Health Network, where she leads professional development workshops and creates practical materials to support teachers in addressing climate emotions.
She is an experienced keynote speaker and has presented at large conferences hosted by the NYC Department of Education and the State University of New York.
Elissa holds a B.A. in international studies with a focus on environmental sustainability from American University and recently began an M.A. in social studies teaching at Brooklyn College. She is an aspiring high school teacher who loves working with students and educators.
