The MƒA Equity Webinars Series invites nationally recognized educators to share ideas that support equity within STEM. Following an interactive presentation by the speaker, Master Teachers have the opportunity to discuss how these ideas might be applied in their own school environments in small groups. Teachers from MƒA, other Master Teacher programs, and people interested in learning more about MƒA are invited to attend.

Since the high-profile release of ChatGPT in 2022, AI’s power to transform teaching and learning has hit a fever pitch. Many view it as a “silver bullet” that will end educational inequality, bolster academic achievement, and spark student engagement, all while reducing the workload of systemically overburdened and underpaid teachers. However, recent research indicates that many AI educational tools are rife with algorithmic biases, threatening to exacerbate—rather than remediate—educational inequity for historically marginalized students.

In this webinar, Dr. Tiera Tanksley will present the challenges, critiques, and calls to action surrounding AI’s role in education. She will also highlight how an explicit focus on justice and educational equity within the design, procurement, use, and teaching of AI technologies can produce transformative results in our classrooms. Throughout, Dr. Tanksley will center the technological innovations of Black youth who participate in the Race, Abolition, and Artificial Intelligence Program, showcasing how we can collectively reimagine, rebuild, and even refuse anti-Black AI systems within education.
