The MƒA Equity Webinars Series invites nationally recognized educators to share ideas that support equity within STEM. Following an interactive presentation by the speaker, Master Teachers have the opportunity to discuss how these ideas might be applied in their own school environments in small groups. Teachers from MƒA, other Master Teacher programs, and people interested in learning more about MƒA are invited to attend.

Do you want to create a more inclusive STEM classroom for your queer students and their families? According to the National School Climate Survey conducted by GLSEN, approximately 25% of high school students identify as LGBTQ+ (2024). Of these students, “more than 68% said they felt unsafe in school because of hostility to at least one of their actual or perceived personal characteristics, for example, their gender identity or expression, or sexual orientation; 76% were verbally harassed because of their identity; and 31% were physically harassed” (GLSEN, 2021).

In this webinar, Dr. Kyle Whipple presents both the big picture of LGBTQ+ inclusion and the pragmatics of how to best support these students every day through the lens of critical care pedagogy. He shares examples relevant to all grades and content areas, while also highlighting specific examples like biological sex diversity in humans and the mathematics behind societal changes, such as the prevalence of they/them pronouns. The tools and resources will be most applicable to middle and high school teachers, but all are welcome.
