Math for America to Honor More Than 1,000 MƒA Teachers at 10th Annual Fall ƒunction

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to Provide Keynote Address

NEW YORK, NY – Math for America (MƒA) will bring together over 1,000 of the best K-12 public school science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teachers from across NYC to honor their commitment to teaching at the 10th Annual MƒA Fall Function. At the organization’s annual gala on Saturday, November 19, 2016, MƒA will host leaders in mathematics, science, and education – all gathered to celebrate the MƒA teacher community – with a special keynote address by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. As the national price tag for replacing teachers who leave the profession climbs to nearly $8 billion, MƒA combats attrition by recognizing and providing resources for outstanding teachers to stay in the classroom.

"A first-rate education begins with top quality teachers and MƒA's invaluable work is seeing that we're attracting and keeping the best and brightest math and science educators in the classroom,” said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. “MƒA's Fall ƒunction is a wonderful opportunity to recognize this noblest of professions and I'm proud to celebrate the awesome impact our teachers are making on their students and our city."

The Fall ƒunction will recognize MƒA Master Teachers and MƒA Early Career Teachers for the positive impact they are making in over 400 New York City public school classrooms. The event begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 19 at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, with guests celebrating these ambassadors of the Master Teacher model who are dedicated to their profession. The MƒA Master Teacher model rewards teachers by providing substantial financial support and an exciting community of scholarship.

“With what seems like daily reports on failing schools, struggling students, or teacher shortages, it’s sometimes easy to get lost in all that is ‘wrong’ with education,” said John Ewing, MƒA President. “MƒA focuses on what’s ‘right’ with education: these excellent teachers, masters of their subject, who are dedicated to their students and their craft. When we honor greatness, we raise the prestige of the whole profession and attract the best possible candidates to a career in the classroom.”

“Our annual Fall ƒunction is the ultimate celebration of MƒA teachers and their good work,” said Megan Roberts, MƒA Executive Director. “What MƒA does is reward and honor these accomplished teachers, encouraging them to stay in the classroom and amplify their impact on their schools, students, and communities.”
