Shirvonne McCarthy

A two-time recipient of the MƒA Master Teacher Fellowship, Shirvonne credits her eighth grade mathematics teacher who inspired her to pursue her own career in teaching. “At the time, I didn’t understand why I enjoyed her so much. Now that I’m older, I see that I am who she was.” Shirvonne knows that success in the classroom comes from excellent student-teacher relationships. “I love those ‘a-ha’ moments when my students figure out problems, and I love to see how they grow.” In addition to teaching mathematics, Shirvonne serves as an advisor to her students, providing support and guidance both academically and personally.

“We’re not always given the highest praise, but we do the hardest work,” says Shirvonne. She actively works to change the perception of teaching – that it is a respected profession. At MƒA, Shirvonne participates in courses on topics ranging from mathematics performance based assessment tasks to the flipped classroom. “At MƒA, I constantly get to try new things and I’m constantly impressed by the wealth of knowledge and skills that are present in this learning community. I experiment with new and innovative ideas and get feedback from my MƒA colleagues. As a community, we focus on what’s fresh and current, and it helps us continue to develop our practice and do more for our students.”

Shirvonne earned her B.S. in Mathematics from Hampton University, her M.A. in Secondary Mathematics Education from Columbia University Teachers College, an M.S. in Applied Statistics from Pennsylvania State University, and an M.A. in Educational Leadership from Brooklyn College. She is the STEM leader at her school and a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Education Association.
