MƒA NY’s mission is to improve math education in secondary public schools by recruiting, training, and retaining outstanding mathematics teachers.
Who We Are
MƒA NY operates two programs, the MƒA Fellowship, to increase the number of mathematically talented teachers, and the MƒA Master Teacher Fellowship, to support outstanding mathematics teachers already in the classroom.
The MƒA NY Fellowships are based on three key principles:
- To teach math effectively one needs strong knowledge of mathematics, solid pedagogical skills, and a desire and ability to interact with young people.
- By providing stipends, it is possible to recruit mathematically qualified individuals into teaching, and to retain outstanding mathematics teachers.
- By providing strong support services, including continuing education, mentoring and professional development, it is possible to inspire a commitment to long-term careers as mathematics teachers
Since its inception in 2004, the MƒA NY Fellowship has provided aspiring mathematics teachers with the training, mentoring, professional development, and financial resources needed to become effective classroom teachers. In the fall of 2009, over 250 MƒA NY Fellows and Master Teachers will be teaching in over 100 New York City public secondary schools, impacting the lives of thousands of students.
The MƒA NY Fellowship is the model for programs in DC, Los Angeles and San Diego. MƒA NY's Fellowships were also the models bolstering a new National Science Foundation Fellowship Program to substantially increase the corps of highly qualified science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teachers.
