Sheldon J. Fine is a New Teacher Advisor at Math for America New York who advises and guides MƒA Fellows in the program.
Sheldon is a mentor at the Institute for the Advancement of Math Education at the City College of New York. Prior to this, he was a leadership consultant and mathematics specialist at the Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York. With a wide range of administrative experience in Community School District Nine, Sheldon held positions as Assistant Superintendent and Director of Mathematics and Science. He has served as Principal of Charles Drew Intermediate School and as an Assistant Principal and math and science teacher at this school as well. In addition to secondary school, Sheldon has served as an adjunct professor at City College in School Administration and Supervision and Secondary Math Education and at Lehman College in Mathematics.
Sheldon has been a member of the New York State Education Department’s Math Advisory Committee and has written test items for the Geometry Regents. He was also the first online facilitator for PBS Mathline (THIRTEEN) for which he received a Golden Apple Award for Innovation in Educational Technology.
Sheldon completed his doctoral studies at Columbia University, Teachers College. He earned an Advanced Certificate in Administration and Supervision and M.A. in Secondary Math Education with Honors from City College of New York, as well as an M.S. in Special Education with Honors from Hunter College. He has resided on Manhattan’s Upper West Side for 39 years, where he has served as Chairman of Community School Board in District 3 and Chairman of Community Board 7.
