Kara Imm is a New Teacher Advisor at MƒA NY. In this role, she provides mentoring, support and guidance to MƒA Fellows through regular classroom observations, co-teaching, and planning meetings.
Prior to Math for America, Kara held a variety of positions in K-12 and teacher education. Kara served for five years as a full-time lecturer and coordinator of the Secondary Math Education program at Pace University School of Education. More recently, she worked as an Achievement Coach for the Urban Assembly, and continues to lead professional development for math teachers and school leaders within the network of 20 secondary schools. She was among a team of educators who founded the Henry Street School for International Studies, where she taught math and led an all-girls advisory. Prior to this, Kara taught for several years at Greenwich Village Middle School and the Manhattan School for Children.
Kara continues to work as a professional developer for Math in the City, where she leads seminars and institutes for teachers in grades K-8. Her work as a research assistant for the Algebra Project (Math in the City) will soon result in professional development materials for teacher educators. Currently she is co-leading a monthly seminar for instructional coaches for the New York City Department of Education, focused on the teaching and learning of secondary mathematics, in light of recent reform initiatives.
Kara was a 2004-2005 Teachers Network Leadership Institute (TNLI) MetLife Fellow, and an award winner with the Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program. She has co-authored articles in the Journal of Mathematical Behavior (in press) and Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School (NCTM), as well as resources for teachers, Minilessons for Operations with Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. She has presented at the Psychology of Math Education (PME-NA) and American Educational Research Association (AERA) annual meetings. Kara earned a Master’s of Science of Education from Bank Street College and a B.A. in American Studies from Stanford University. She is currently working on a Ph.D. in Urban Education from the Graduate Center, The City University of New York. Kara happily lives in Brooklyn, where she trains for triathlons and throws a mean dinner party.
