Kara Stern

Kara Stern joined Math for America in June 2010 as the Director of the MƒA NY program.

Prior to MƒA, Kara was the Associate Head of School at The Calhoun School in New York City. In this role she oversaw the academic and co-curricular program, created and led all professional development, teacher training and mentor programs, and launched a school-wide Master Teacher program. Before becoming Associate Head of School, Kara served for five years as Calhoun’s Middle School Director, where she oversaw all curriculum and staff development, admissions and retention decisions, budget and hiring for the division. Prior to joining Calhoun, Kara held positions as the 11th and 12th Grade Dean, Academic Dean, English Department Chair, and high school English teacher at the Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School.

Kara earned her Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning at New York University Steinhardt School of Education in 2005. In 1998, she was awarded a Joseph F. Klingenstein Fellowship at Columbia University Teachers College, and spent the year earning her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration. She received a B.A. with Honors from Wesleyan University in 1988. Kara has presented at a number of education conferences, and areas of expertise include professional development design, new teacher training and induction, curriculum and pedagogy design, and the development of teacher professional learning communities. Kara has served as a trustee for The Corlears School and as an interviewer for the Joseph F. Klingenstein Fellowship. A native New Yorker, Kara lives in Forest Hills with her partner and four children.
