Gretel Johnson is a Senior Program Associate at Math for America New York. In this role, Gretel provides primary support for MƒA Fellows entering their second, third and fourth years of teaching and MƒA Early Career Fellows, oversees Early Career Advisors and New Teacher Advisors for Fellows in their second year of teaching, and participates in the screening and selection process.
Prior to this position, Gretel was an MƒA Master Teacher with nine years of mathematics teaching experience in New York City public schools. She most recently taught Integrated Algebra at the School for International Studies in Brooklyn, NY, and also held mathematics teaching positions at the School for Human Rights and George W. Wingate High School. Gretel has facilitated and led professional development opportunities for new and experienced mathematics teachers through various leadership roles, including serving as an Autonomous Zone Lab Site Teacher, MƒA Professional Learning Committee Facilitator and Math Institute for Leadership in Education Instructor. A member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Gretel has presented on topics such as “Creating a Project-based Curriculum” and “Student-centered Pedagogy” at Metromath and Radical Math conferences.
Gretel earned a Master of Arts in Secondary Education from the Brooklyn College Graduate School of Education/CUNY and a B.A. in Mathematics and Spanish from the University of Rochester. Gretel lives in Brooklyn and is an avid sports fan, coaching basketball and softball for the Police Athletic League in her spare time.
