Amy Shapiro

As a Senior Program Associate at Math for America New York, Amy Shapiro supports MƒA Fellows and Master Teachers, collaborates on planning professional development programming, oversees New Teacher Advisors and participates in the screening and selection process for the Fellowship programs.

An educator with nine years of teaching and administrative experience in public high schools in the Bronx, Amy was most recently an adjunct professor at Pace University School of Education. She taught a variety of courses, such as “Making Mathematics Meaningful” and courses to prepare career changers to be math teachers in New York City public schools. Amy also served as lead math teacher at the Bronx Lab School, where she was responsible for the development of all math and science curricula and mentoring math and science teachers. Amy was previously a founding teacher at Bronx Engineering and Technology Academy and mathematics and physics teacher at Alfred E. Smith CTE High School. Amy has also held roles as business manager and financial analyst at Columbia Innovation Enterprise, the technology transfer office at Columbia University.

Amy earned her M.S. in Applied Physics with a concentration in Atmospheric Science from Columbia University, School of Engineering and Applied Science and B.A. from Hamilton College in Physics, with a minor in Mathematics. Amy lives in Manhattan and in her spare time enjoys swimming and walking her dog, both of which are necessary if she wants to maintain her current relationship with pizza and chocolate. Additionally, she loves learning to dance Cuban salsa and developing her Spanish language abilities.
