MfA Fellowship
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.
  • Have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited College or University. An applicant's Bachelor's degree must be conferred by June 2009
  • Have completed substantial coursework in mathematics. All of the pre-service training programs require strong quantitative preparation
    • A minimum of 18 credits in math courses at the calculus level or higher are required
    • Qualifying candidates typically have more than 21 credits in mathematics, including single and multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and advanced statistics
    • A guideline undergraduate GPA for an MƒA Fellow is 3.0 (B) on a 4-point scale
  • Be new to teaching
  • Achieve a competitive score on the ETS Praxis II Math Content exams
    • Applicants must take two Praxis tests; Mathematics: Content Knowledge (0061) and Mathematics: Proofs, Models, and Problems, Part 1 (0063)
    • Praxis exams must be taken by March 14, 2009
    • Typical Praxis scores for MƒA Fellows range from 150 to 180 on the Mathematics Content Knowledge test and from 175 to 190 on the Proofs, Models and Problems test

Successful Candidate Attributes

MƒA Fellowships are awarded to individuals who are mathematically talented and enjoy working with young people. All MƒA Fellows make a commitment to teach in public schools while actively participating in MƒA corps activities and events.

Admission to the MƒA Fellowship is competitive and our applicants have many unique talents and accomplishments. The Screening and Selection Committee thoroughly reviews the entire application, including academic accomplishments, mathematical ability, interpersonal skills and commitment to MƒA’s mission.

Our successful candidates come from varied backgrounds with a variety of life experiences. While there is no one profile for an ideal applicant, we have identified the following qualities of successful applicants:

  • Know and love math
  • Enjoy teaching and interacting with young people
  • Possess excellent communication skills
  • Be able to create a constructive learning environment for students
  • Make a five year commitment to the MƒA Fellowship Program
