Who We Are

MƒA Boston is a partnership with Boston University (BU) with support from the National Science Foundation, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)/Wellesley Scheller Teacher Education Program (STEP). MƒA Boston operates two programs: the MƒA Boston Fellowship and MƒA Boston Master Teacher Fellowship.

MƒA Boston Fellowship

The MƒA Boston Fellowship rewards highly qualified individuals who wish to become middle or high school mathematics teachers. Fellows must have been STEM professionals or recent graduates who are interested in urban education and working with a diverse group of young people.

Fellows receive a full scholarship to earn a master’s degree in mathematics education and a stipend totaling $62,500 over five years.


How the Program Works
Year One: Prepare to become a secondary math teacher.

  • Full scholarship to Boston University’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program in mathematics, plus living stipends.
  • Membership in a rich mathematical community of undergraduate and graduate students, teachers, mathematics educators and mathematicians through workshops, meetings and social events.

Years Two through Five: Teach in a Boston area public school.

  • Teach for at least four years in a high-need district upon successful completion of the MAT degree program.
  • Mentoring, support and professional development opportunities and participation in MƒA Boston corps activities.


How to Apply

  1. Visit the Boston University Noyce Scholarship program page and follow the instructions.
  2. Apply to the Boston University MAT program.
  3. Fill out the financial assistance application.
  4. Complete the Noyce Scholarships supplemental application.
  5. Submit GRE and Praxis II scores.
  6. Deadline for applications is March 1, 2010.

MƒA Boston Master Teacher Fellowship

The MƒA Boston Master Teacher Fellowship is for experienced middle and high school mathematics teachers who would like to become instructional leaders in their schools. Master Teachers must have majored in mathematics and have a master’s degree in mathematics, mathematics education or a related STEM field, and they must be employed in a high-needs district in the Boston area.

Master Teachers receive a full scholarship for an advanced degree program and a stipend totaling $62,500 over five years.


How the Program Works
Year One and Two: Receive advanced teaching degrees.

  • Full scholarship to Boston University’s Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) degree program in mathematics education or a full scholarship to Boston University’s Master of Mathematics for Teaching (MMT) degree program.
  • Become part of a vibrant community, consisting of teachers, mathematicians, mathematics educators, researchers and graduate and undergraduate students.

Years One through Five: Continue to teach in a Boston area public school.

  • Teach for at least five years in a high-need district in the Boston area, and take on leadership responsibilities within the school.
  • Professional development and support through attending workshops associated with the PROMYS for Teachers program and contributing to Boston University’s School of Education pre-service education program.
  • Leadership activities with other Master Teachers that can be implemented into affiliated school districts.

  3. Submit GRE and Praxis II scores.
  4. Deadline for applications is March 15, 2010.
